Press Release:
EDP launches Surf For Tomorrow, a unique surf program and 10-part documentary series that aims to help five Iberian surfers aged 13 to 16 achieve their dreams of making the World Tour.

EDP Surf for Tomorrow is an ambitious and unique program focused on the personal and sports training of five young Iberian surfers aged between 13 and 16 years old. Through mentorship, elite sports coaching, travel, competition and, most importantly, time in the ocean, the aim is to have the athletes reach the elite of world surfing, the World Tour.

A ten-part documentary series, narrated by surfing icon Shaun Tomson, will showcase the team’s evolution on various training trips to the best waves around the world and as they compete on the junior professional circuit. As the teenagers chase their dreams, the roller coaster of emotions that comes with expectations and responsibility is compiled in real-time over 10 episodes. Episode 1 “The Future Is Now” is live now.

João Mendonça, Gabriela Dinis, Matias Canhoto, Hans and Kai Odriozola are the five surfers who will attempt to achieve their dreams under the mentorship of legendary Portuguese surf coach José Seabra.

“My dream is the same as everyone here on the Surf For Tomorrow program; to make it to the CT and become World Champion,” said 13-year-old Hans Odriozola.

Surf For Tomorrow is part of EDP’s Changing Tomorrow Now program which illustrates its commitment to the planet’s sustainability and renewable energies. The utility, based in Portugal, operates in 22 countries and is the fourth biggest wind energy producer globally. Using the power of wind, sun, and water, the company is aiming to be 100% green by 2030.

“At EDP, we face this new decade with a sense of mission and urgency. The need to change our footprint today will be decisive to guarantee a more sustainable, inclusive and fair tomorrow,” said Miguel Stilwell d’Andrade, executive president of EDP.

The company has been a long-time supporter of surfing, however Surf For Tomorrow is a new investment in a current generation with the goal to achieve a more promising future. The aim is to not only take Iberian surfing further but reinforce the role of sustainability and the preservation of our seas.

The ten-part documentary series, created by Estúdio Imigrante, will follow both the individual and collective journeys of the athletes as they train, travel, and compete around Europe and the rest of the world. Episode 1 titled “The Future Is Now” introduces the athletes and the coach José Seabra at a camp in Ericeira as we see the team start their epic journey together.

“Professional surfing was my one big dream 50 years ago and to see where the sport has come has been beyond my wildest expectations,” said Shaun Tomson, the 1977 World Champion and narrator. “That’s why it’s been such a pleasure to watch and tell the stories of these five surfers in the Surf For Tomorrow program as they pursue their dream of becoming the next generation of professional surfers.”
