Vans Custom Culture Winner Kide Baharudin Brings His Paintings To Life With New Collection
Hailing from the small village of Kuala Pilah in Malaysia, and hot on the heels of winning Vans Asia Custom Culture competition in 2017 and creating art for House of Vans, artist Kide Baharudin is partnering with Vans for his first-ever official head-to-toe collection this spring.
The Vans x Kide collection is a direct reflection of the emerging creative visionary’s playful, vibrant take on storytelling and the unique characters he dreams up through his relationship with local history and culture. Kide’s colourful, hand-painted illustrations are styled with Vans’ “Off The Wall” spirit in mind:
“While cycling in my hometown, I love seeing the small town and village of Kuala Pilah,” said Baharudin. “I like to imagine how the place looked back in the 1950s, ‘60s and ‘70s. I try to find the story through my parents’ childhood. Then I’ll illustrate this in my paintings.”
Key to the collection is the Slip-On SF in Kide’s classic white/marshmallow colourway. The updated classic is constructed of a sturdy cotton canvas upper with engineered collapsible kick down heel, Vans UltraCush sock-liner for maximum cushioning, and an original waffle outsole. Finally, the entire shoe is crafted with water-based inks and glues.
Supporting the Slip-On SF is an Authentic SF and Slide-On, each featuring similar artwork. The Slide-On features a moulded PU contoured footbed for all day support and a synthetic leather strap with soft foam backed stretch canvas for maximum comfort for all foot shapes.
A 100% Rayon, straight-hem Camp T-shirt in all-over print, as well as surf trunks, tee, tank, backpack, and two hats, round out the Vans x Kide collection.
An emerging artist from Negeri Sembilan, Malaysia, Kide Baharudin focuses on painting on canvas and working with other traditional mediums. His work explores the relationship between human characters, and their local culture and history. He is the winner of the Vans Custom Culture Interactive shoe customisation contest for the APAC region.
The Vans x Kide collection is now available at Vans retailers and at vans.eu/surf
