Interviewee: Jassie Salveson, Marketing and Sales
How was the 2023/24 base layer market?
The 2023/24 season posed challenges for the soft goods market, driven by climate change, cost-of-living pressures, and surplus inventory. At ROJO, we viewed these obstacles as an opportunity to reinforce our support for independent snow retailers. To address these market dynamics, we curated a tightly focused base layer collection designed to complement our outerwear line. This streamlined approach prioritizes fresh styles, versatile designs, and a cohesive palette that offers retailers flexibility without overwhelming them with excessive options—because layering should be about top-ups, not dozens of choices.
Are there any new trends in base layers?
With cost-of-living pressures in mind, today’s base layers must strike the perfect balance between functionality, sustainability and lifestyle. Athleisure-inspired designs dominate, blending performance for cold conditions with timeless, affordable, and comfortable aesthetics. Consumers now want pieces that work seamlessly on the mountain, at the gym, or even lounging at home. Cross functionality is key.
What’s your base layer strategy for 2025/26?
For 2025/26, our base layers are 90% recycled polyester—a high-performing, breathable, warm, and anti-pilling material. Our strategy focuses on creating climate-conscious, cost-effective, and versatile designs that meet the demands of the modern consumer. Base layers are no longer confined to the slopes; they need to work across multiple environments, whether it’s a cold-weather hike, yoga session, or après-ski lounge. With vibrant, nature-inspired designs, ROJO’s signature colourful prints celebrate the outdoors while inspiring wearers to embrace their mountain spirit. Our high-neck silhouettes offer superior protection in extreme conditions, while cropped 7/8 pants bring unparalleled versatility, perfect for movement on and off the slopes.
