Brand:  ORTOVOX
Interviewee: Mr Tobias Maletz, Product Manager Backpacks

What are the major trends in the snow backpack market for FW21/22?
Sustainability remains a dominant topic, whether you call it a “trend” or the new normal. Our new Free Rider backpack is climate neutral, the main material recycled and, of course, PFC-free.

Regarding actual trends versatility and multi-function even with specialized products is very important. For instance, the new Free Rider backpack which has been designed for freeriding only in the past has now been adapted to freetouring and more alpine ascents and lines as well.

What were your best sellers in FW20/21?
Our bestselling backpack for FW20/21 has been the new skitouring-backpack HAUTE ROUTE.

What are the most important technologies/features in your FW21/22 technical backpack collection?
The most important technical feature for the new Free Rider backpack is a new backsystem combined with a flexible, technical belt – called CLASP back system and CLASP FLEX belt. The system allows the backpack to fit tightly to the back of the rider without any restrictions to the freedom of movement. Additionally, a new compression system to the sides of the backpack allows it to be pulled towards the body’s centre of gravity.

FREE RIDER

Please name and describe 3 highlight items from your FW 20/21collection.
Our number one highlight for FW21/22 is the new FREE RIDER backpack series for ambitious backcountry travelers.

The FREE RIDER has been completely overhauled to fit snugly to the back when freeriding in any terrain. This is primarily down to the flat, elasticated CLASP FLEX BELT, which provides control in every situation as well as reliable support. Soft back pads hug the back perfectly without hindering the vertebrae in their movements. On the inside, the back of the backpack can be fitted with the separate CLASP SPINE PROTECTOR, which is certified to motorcycle standards. It can be slid easily into a separate inner pocket. In order to optimally adjust the backpack while on the go, it can be quickly compressed using the integrated side straps and folded into a flat, second skin on the back. When it comes to rappelling into steep gullies or short walking passages, the FREE RIDER has all the necessary attachment options for skis, ice axe or rope, not to mention the tried-and-tested helmet net, emergency card and hydration system compatibility. All the features are well stowed away on the outside to prevent them catching, even when in rough terrain. All models also offer enough space for climbing skins and ski crampons, ensuring extra flexibility on the go. Emergency equipment can be neatly stowed away and kept at hand in a separate safety compartment, while all other items in the main compartment are accessible via the front or back access.
