– NEW THREAT TO THE FUTURE OF THE BRAVE WOMEN OF KRUŠČICA –

This Friday marks the one year anniversary of the day that the Brave Women of Kruščica – one of three activist communities featured in the Blue Heart film – were physically attacked by police while defending their river against the threat of hydropower development. This small group has stood guard on the bridge for over a year, 24 hours a day, and their fight continues today.

In June, the women won a major victory after a Bosnian court ruled that the environmental permit for dam construction on the Kruščica river should be annulled immediately, meaning that any further construction work on the proposed dam is illegal.

However, this victory was short-lived. Just this week, the contractor for Kruščica 1 hydropower plant brought heavy machinery and 15 government officials to the bridge to attempt to start work on the hydro project. A three hour stand-off took place, during which over 200 villagers and neighbours blocked the access point and requested that they be shown a permit or warrant for the action – something that the contractor and government officials were unable to do.

Eventually the contractor retreated, taking the machinery away with them. However, this attempt shows that the threat to species, ecosystems and communities from hydropower investments is now just as real as ever, both in Kruščica and all across the Balkan Peninsular.

In the words of Maida Bilal, one of the Kruščica activists: “Despite all of the pressures that we are exposed to on a daily basis, we do not give up.“
