What are the main trends in the helmet and/or snow protection market for action sports in FW19/20 and how do you address them with your products?
Action sports trends will come and go a lot but we think helmets should just look good and work well. At Sandbox, our main focus is always to build high quality, good looking, lower profile helmets and every product we create is certified for its intended use.
Action sports are continually progressing, and with them, so are the riders’ needs for safety, comfort and style. Our commitment to progression and creativity make Sandbox one of the industry’s most respected helmet manufacturers. We have some really cool new men’s and women’s prints coming out for 2019/20.
What about price points, what is your standard here and where is the development going?
We offer a premium product at a mid-price point. For example our Apex line features luxury finishing, plush fabrics and a BOA technology fit system but still doesn’t break the bank.
Have you noticed a change in attitude towards wearing snow helmets/ protection? Do you think people are generally more risk-averse in recent years?
The entire ski and snowboard market are big supporters of helmet use overall. However, there is still a core group of riders both pro and amateur that still don’t wear helmets. I think it will come around for this group eventually; it’s just taking a little longer. I use the pro hockey analogy all the time; back in the day the goalie didn’t even wear a mask in hockey, now every player wouldn’t even think of going on the ice without a helmet on and it’s a strict rule of play.
