The Wave Bristol To Reopen August 1
The Wave in Bristol is reopening on August 1 with procedures in line with government guidelines to ensure social distancing and good hygiene. Visitors will have to book -surfers and non surfers- so that The Wave can be confident of social distancing across the site.
The Wave to Reopen for a Summer of Surfing
The Wave, the inland surfing lake in Bristol, has today announced that it will be reopening on August 1. The unique attraction which opened last November has been closed since March due to the Coronavirus crisis. People can now book a surf on www.thewave.com.
The Wave Founder, Nick Hounsfield, said:
“Having to close our doors days before the Easter holidays, and on the cusp of our first peak season, was gutting. It is properly exciting to now finally have a reopening date. We have been closely following Government guidance and developing a new way of working which will allow us to safely welcome people back to ride our waves. We are currently bringing our brilliant team off furlough and are all working hard to get ready for a summer of surfing.”
In line with Government guidance and social distancing measures, The Wave has changed a number of things about the way it operates. These include:
- Managing the numbers visiting at any one time
- Reducing the number of surfers in beginner lessons to 5 plus a coach
- Maximising the use of the spacious grounds with plenty of socially distanced seating
- Increasing the frequency of cleaning key areas such as changing rooms and toilets
- Putting a new ‘one way’ system in place to change the way people move around the site
- Locating plenty of hand sanitiser points around the site, which staff will ask people to use
A major change is that all visitors, including non-surfers, must pre-book in order to visit. This is to allow the team to manage numbers across the site and make sure social distancing is maintained at all times. In addition, anyone experiencing any symptoms of COVID-19 will be asked to postpone their surf to a future date, allowing for quarantine periods as advised by the Government.
Nick continues:
“We are an outdoor destination with plenty of space around the surfing lake and further afield. We have now opened up the paths and green areas around the site and added more socially distanced seating, allowing people to easily find their own space to settle and enjoy their visit. We have also added more ‘pop up’ food outlets in the grounds, so people can enjoy a delicious al fresco bite to eat after their surf!”
From August, surf slots will be available from 7am until 8pm – great for surfers seeking a dawn patrol or sunset session! The day will start with Advanced Plus and Expert Waves running in the first hour, followed by Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced throughout the day. Beginner lessons will be limited with group sizes reduced to just 5 people per coach, as per Government guidelines – lessons will be available every day from 8:30am until 5:30pm, with slots opening up based on demand.
Open all year round, The Wave is located in a beautiful rural site on the edge of Bristol, close to the M5. It’s the first inland surfing destination of its kind in the world, powered by Wavegarden Cove technology, which provides up to 1,000 waves of varying sizes and shapes an hour. Heights start at 50cm and peak at 1.8m. Every aspect of the surfing experience, from perfect waves and supportive coaching, to tried and tested wetsuits and boards, has been designed to ensure that surfing really is fun for all – from a child stepping on a board for the first time, to a pro surfer training for the Olympics.
The Wave is not just about surfing. It’s about sharing incredible experiences in a naturally healthy space. It’s about improving health and wellbeing, helping people feel like the best version of themselves and having a shed-load of fun along the way. As well as the surfing lake, there’s a clubhouse serving food and drink, pop-up food outlets outside, lots of socially distanced seating and plenty of green space to enjoy.
