Retail Buyers Guide: Skate Helmets & Protection 2024 Retail Buyer’s Guide
Brand: Triple 8
Interviewee: Noah Todaro, Marketing Manager
What trends are you noticing in boardsport protection for 2024?So far in 2024 we’ve released a few products that cater specifically to what customers have been asking us for. Not necessarily your traditional helmets and pads, but tertiary/accessory items that help refine the fit and extend the life of existing products. In addition to that, we’ve seen a bit of a shift in interest from Pro Models and Collaborations back to basics.
What are your main price points for next season in helmets, pads, protectors?
Our price points remain generally the same – within the range of very affordable beginner pads and helmets, to more expensive pro-level pads and helmets. One thing to note is that we do plan to introduce a few premium helmets in the second half of the year that’ll sit at a slightly higher price point than our current line.
How is skate participation developing and how important is protection to new riders?
Skate participation is developing a bit slower than it has the last few years, but demand for protective gear within that group remains strong. We do anticipate a bit of a resurgence this summer with the Olympics happening again, and so we will be ready at that time to provide gear for any skill level that requires it.
What are your main stories in terms of protective technologies for 2024?
We’re continuing to innovate our helmet technologies to create even more comfortable, better fitting, Certified helmets. We are also working with a bunch of new materials on pads that make them more durable and comfortable.
How are you communicating safety certification and is it a must-have?
We are continuing to phase out colorways of our non-Certified helmets and introduce new, Certified helmets that offer a similar fit, but with better protection. Consumers are more educated than ever on the importance of safety certifications and so we try and be sure to cater to those needs.
Do your protection products cross over into other sports?
Yes, our helmets and pads are good for a multitude of uses! From their traditional uses in action sports, to things like construction sites and racing pit crews, these products do the job well.
What helmet designs are trending (full helmets/ lighter models)?
Consumers just want a helmet that fits comfortably and doesn’t look massive on their head. We have figured out some clever ways to accomplish this by working new technologies into the EPS and liner so that the helmet fits as low on the head as possible.
What are trending styles in pads and gloves?
Similar to helmets, comfort is paramount for pads. Consumers want to feel well-protected, but not necessarily have all the bulk. We have worked hard to develop slimmer models of pads for 2024 that feel lighter and comfier, but will protect the same way as our thickest pads.
Which colours and graphics/ collaborations are you looking forward to for next season?
We have a few collaborations coming up that we’re excited about – but as far as what’s available right now, our Glitter helmets (in Black, Silver and Gold) are hard to keep in stock due to all the demand!
Which technical features are you the most proud of in your protective gear?
Again, some new helmets coming out in the second half of 2024 are really exciting and pushing the envelope for Certified helmet comfort. Never before have we or anyone else figured out a way to get a Certified helmet to fit just above the eyebrows, same as a non-certified helmet would.
What impact technologies in helmets are you incorporating?
